Overview of Workshop

Every summer, the University of Kentucky LINKS Center offers a workshop on social network analysis. The workshop is held on the U of Kentucky campus. The dates for the 2010 workshop are June 7 - June 12.

The workshop includes a number of different mini-sessions (see schedule below). Most are oriented toward beginners, but there are several advanced courses as well. In addition, one day of the workshop is devoted to specific applications areas (choice of health, crime/defense, and management areas).

The sessions are arranged in three concurrent tracks (although participants can mix and match sessions without regard for tracks). The first track might be thought of as a general introduction to social network analysis, including of balance of theory, method and software utilization. The second track is a more advanced track that includes more mathematical detail, a focus on analytical techniques, and more advanced use of software. The third track is also technical in character but focuses exclusively on stochastic models for network analysis, such as ERGM/P* and SIENA.

The workshop starts on Monday with very introductory sessions in each track. Tuesday through Thursday are the "main" sessions in each track. On Friday, there are three new tracks (just 1-day each), based on application areas. Track 1 is management and organizations, Track 2 is crime and national security, and Track 3 is health.

In addition, the workshop features two vehicles to help participants develop their network research. One is a 1-day conference on the last day in which participants can present their work and receive feedback from each other and the workshop instructors. Another is an opportunity to make appointments each day to discuss your research with experienced network researchers. There is no extra cost for either of these options.

It is not necessary to attend all sessions, but the cost is the same regardless of how many you attend. Note that some sessions are offered concurrently, so attending some precludes attending others.

Formal Sessions

The sessions are divided into three parallel tracks, and within track, four sequential groups: refresher courses, main courses, application courses and the works-in-progress conference. The refresher and application courses are all 1 day in length, while the main courses are 3 days. Although we have laid out the sessions in tracks, participants may mix and match as they choose.

Research Development Appointments

Ajay Mehra will be available for in-depth one-on-one consultations to discuss network research projects (at any stage of conception/development) by appointment any time during the workshop, and will also hold office hours from 6 PM to 7 PM M-TH. Ajay's research focuses on the role of psychology in the building and leveraging of human social networks. He has served multiple terms on the editorial boards of Administrative Science Quarterly and Academy of Management Review. For further details on Ajay's research, please see www.ajaymehra.net.

Costs & Refunds

The basic cost for the workshop is $1,500. However, students pay only half price, which is just $750.

Please note that the cost is the same no matter how many or how few sessions you attend. See also the costs page. If you register but then decide not to come, you may get a full refund if you contact us one week before the start of the workshop. See our refund policy for more information.
